When buying Art online, whether paintings prints or scultpures, it is likely
that the seller will offer some form of Secure Online Ordering, allowing you to
simply enter your credit card details and purchase an item immediately. In the case of
Clipart and Wallpapers etc, you may even be able to download the art within minutes.
But are the use of Credit Cards online safe? And just how secure is Secure Online Ordering?
Secure Online Ordering
Different websites offer different forms of Online ordering, some use an external system
for controlling payment transfers between two parties, such as PayPal, others operate their
own proprietary ordering and credit card systems.
In general these systems use an encrypted communication channel, i.e. a secured link between
your browser and the website to encrypt and protect your information. Hence, your personal
information, including your name, credit card number and address, cannot be read when it
travels across the Internet. In general, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and Secure Online
Ordering is extremely secure
and it is very unlikely your data will be vulnerable. If a website offers Secure Online
Ordering by Credit Card, this is the best and safest way to buy online.
Offline Ordering
Where websites do not offer Secure Online Ordering you may be asked to either contact the
seller directly by phone or email to instigate your purchase. Always remember NEVER send
sensitive information by email, in particular credit card or bank details, as emails are
certainly not secure. If in any
doubt simply contact the seller directly as most, even those offering Secure Online Ordering,
will offer offline payment options. After all a sale is a sale! If they will not wait a few
days for your check to arrive then take your business elsewhere!
